Abdullah bin Khubaib (Radhiallaho anha) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said to me,”Recite Surat Al-Ikhlas and Al-Mu`awwidhatain (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) three times at dawn and dusk. It will suffice you in all respects.” [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi]. Riyad-us-Saliheen – Hadith No : 1456.

Imam Ahmad has recorded a narration in his Musnad that a person came up to the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu ‘Alyhe Wa Sallam) and said, “I love this Surah [Al-Ikhlas] immensely.” The Holy Prophet (Sallalahu ‘Alyhe Wa Sallam) replied: “Your love for it will cause you to enter Paradise. ” [Ibn Kathir]

Abu Hurairah (RadiAllahu ‘Anhu) that once the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu ‘Alyhe Wa Sallam) asked the people to gather and said:”I shall recite to you a third of the Quran?” When the people had congregated, he recited Surah Al-Ikhlas and said: “This is equal to a third of the Quran.” [Muslim].

In a lengthy Hadith, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi and Nasa’i have recorded that the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu A’lyhe Wa Sallam) said: “Anyone who recites Surah Al-Ikhlas and the mu’awwadhatain (i.e. Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas) morning and evening, they shall be sufficient for him.” In another narration, the wordings are: “They will suffice him against every affliction.” [Ibn Kathir]

Imam Ahmad has recorded a narration in his Musnad on the authority of Sayyidina ‘Uqbah Ibn ‘Amir (RadiAllahu ‘Anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu ‘Alyhe Wa Sallam) said: “I shall show you three such Surahs that are revealed in Torah, Injil, Zabiir and the Quran. Do not sleep at night until such time that you have recited them. They are Surah Al-Ikhlas and the mu’awwadhatain (i.e. Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas).” Sayyidna ‘Uqbah Ibn ‘Amir (RadiAllahu ‘Anhu) says that since I have heard this, I did not miss reciting them. [Ibn Kathir]

A’isha (radiAllahu anha) reported that whenever the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times.

‘Uqba b. ‘Amir reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said to me: “There have been sent down to me verses the like of which had never been seen before. They are the Mu’awwadhatain.” (Sahih Muslim Bk.004 Ch.136 No.1775)
# Narrated Uqbah ibn Amir: I was driving the she-camel of the Apostle of Allah (SAW) during a journey. He said to me: “Uqbah, should I not teach you two best surahs ever recited?” He then taught me: “Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn,” (Surah al-Falaq, Qur’an Ch.113) and “Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of men.”(Surah an-Nas, Qur’an Ch.114) He did not see me much pleased (by these two surahs). When he alighted for prayer, he led the people in the morning prayer and recited them in prayer. When the Apostle of Allah (SAW) finished his prayer, he turned to me and said: “O Uqbah, how did you see?” (Sunan Abu Dawud Bk.8 No.1457)
# Narrated Uqbah ibn Amir: The Apostle of Allah (SAW) commanded me to recite Mu’awwidhatayn (the last two surahs of the Qur’an) after every prayer. (Sunan Abu Dawud Bk.8 No.1518)

The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) used to seek refuge from the jinn as well as from the evil eye until Surah al Falaq and An Naas were revealed. When they were sent down, he utilised them and left other things.

A’isha (radiAllahu anha) reported that whenever the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) became sick, he would recite Mu’awwidhat (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) and then blow his breath over his body. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite (these two Surahs) and rub his hands over his body hoping for its blessings.
