Clear message to jump ship during meeting with Dr M, says Zahid

Clear message to jump ship during meeting with Dr M, says Zahid

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says he and other party leaders met with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today admitted that he and other senior party leaders had met with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Zahid said at the meeting, the message was clear.

“The message is very loud and clear that we must jump ship and join PPBM.

“We must dissolve Umno,” he said after delivering the keynote address at the 72nd MIC general assembly at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).

Zahid said also present at the meeting was his deputy and Umno’s vice-presidents.

He was responding to questions by reporters on whether he had been personally asked by Mahathir to jump ship.

Zahid, however, refused to elaborate further on the meeting with Mahathir.

Previously, it was reported that Mahathir had welcomed Umno members who wanted to join PPBM.

Zahid also refused to comment on Umno veteran Mustapa Mohamad, better known as Tok Pa, who officially submitted his membership application form to join PPBM to Mahathir, who is the party’s chairman, last night.

“Who is Tok Pa? I don’t know who’s that,” was his response when pressed by the media.

Earlier in his speech, Zahid, who is facing 45 charges related to criminal breach of trust, money laundering and corruption involving more than RM100 million, said he was sure he would not have been charged had he decided to jump ship together with the other Umno leaders who had done so.

He claimed that he was slapped with so many charges because he had refused to jump ship and dissolve Umno and BN.

“I have never seen anyone being slapped with 45 charges. It is a new record in the country and I must congratulate myself.

“I will never jump ship and dissolve Umno and BN. I have to stand firm on this.

“I am innocent, my intention is good and I have never misused the funds as alleged.”

Zahid also warned of the possibility that other leaders, not only from Umno but also from MIC and MCA, would face similar actions from the authorities.

“We must not be afraid and we must defend the truth for the sake of BN,” he said.

Umno’s Puteri wing chooses to stand by Zahid ‘in trying times’

Umno’s Puteri wing chooses to stand by Zahid ‘in trying times’

Puteri Umno chief Zahida Zarik Khan said her wing will continue to give moral support to the party president during ‘these trying times’.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — Umno’s Puteri wing has pledged to stand by party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today, even as its Youth wing had yesterday urged him to go on leave until his court cases are resolved.

Puteri Umno chief Zahida Zarik Khan said her wing will continue to give moral support to Zahid during “these trying times”, and will go on defending and protecting the party.

“We are like children who do not have the heart to impose more emotional burden on their ‘father’, who is currently facing some problems, while at the same time, managing this ‘large Umno family’.

“We call for other Umno members, especially Puteri members, to calm down and continue to pray for the best for our leaders and beloved party,” she said in a statement.

Zahida said Puteri has chosen to take a more mature stance by engaging in discussions with the management committee, political bureau as well as the supreme council.

She said the wing understands the challenges faced by an Opposition leader, and believes that Zahid has his own way of dealing with his current predicament.

“He has the right to fight for justice based on the principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ and should not face prejudice when speaking to the media.

“Our party currently is being pressured by the ruling government, where we can see our leaders being charged one after another, and there will likely be more to come due to political motives and the selective prosecutions that it is practising,” she said.

Yesterday, Umno Youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the wing had requested that Zahid take a leave of absence as he said it was unfair that the Umno president is burdened with party duties while fighting various charges in court.

Zahid had last Friday claimed trial to 45 charges of money laundering involving RM72 million and criminal breach of trust (CBT), and accepting bribes involving RM42 million.

TTF: Zahid was tricked by Dato’ Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan into meeting Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the latter’s office. The purpose of the meeting was for Mahathir to ask Zahid if he was willing to disband UMNO and coax all Members of Parliament (MPs), branch and division leaders from the party to join PPBM. Zahid refused flatly and suffered Mahathir’s wrath. Furious, the Prime Minister got several online media activists to viral pictures and messages of the meeting and suggest that Zahid had crawled to his office to beg for help. TTF will come out with the full story soon.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno acting president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he offered himself for the post of Umno president as he believed in continuity of the party’s leadership hierarchy.

Having been entrusted to carry out the responsibilities of Umno president, he felt he would be able to carry on the struggle shouldered by past leaders.

The Bagan Datuk member of parliament said he was also an individual who believed in open party elections where anyone could contest for the post of president and deputy president, such that the proposal was agreed to by the supreme council, for Umno’s polls this year.

His agenda for change in Umno include revamping the party’s charter, restructuring the party organisation and opening the Umno membership system to the concept of volunteerism.

“My other agenda include uniting the Malays without being racist because we have seen how that unity had now been shredded into small groups,” he told a press conference at Bangunan Umno today.

Meanwhile,  Zahid said he visualised a new amalgamation of parties to replace the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition that had been rejected by the voters in the 14th general election.

He said the new coalition could comprise race-based parties and like BN must prioritise the plural society concept without neglecting the interest of their respective races.

“A coalition or a party similar to BN has to be formed so that all parties be put under one roof and work together to form the next government.

“We must acknowledge that our struggle is not merely for the interest of our own race,” he told reporters at his office at Menara Dato Onn today.

The former deputy prime minister said, the issue must be discussed together with the other interested coalition components.
