Dr Mahathir shows no remorse on Memali victims

KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is anything but graceful in his speeches, and he may have crossed the line with his attacks this time around, offending family members of those who died in the Memali incident in Baling, Kedah on November 19, 1985.
In his speech on May 3 in Lembah Pantai, the DAP-led Opposition leader not only took a swipe at PAS for allegedly joining forces with UMNO, but showed his vengeance against the villagers who demonstrated against UMNO during the siege involving the two parties.
Lashing out at PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, Dr Mahathir remarked, “They (PAS) called UMNO infidels, they called me an infidel, and said if one works with infidels then they too will become an infidel.”
“Now look who’s joining forces with UMNO? Out of the blue he says UMNO are not infidels. Maybe he is deaf or illiterate, everyone knows accept him,” the nonagenarian chastised Abdul Hadi.
And as if his smears were not enough, Dr Mahathir continued chiding Abdul Hadi over his proclamation in 1981, “Amanat Haji Hadi” that stated UMNO and its members were infidels, while questioning the leader’s administrative style.
“Many things were taken out of context. He even proclaimed “Amanat Haji Hadi” which called for his supporters to kill policemen because he deemed them infidels which resulted in the deaths of 14 villagers and 4 policemen.
“He claimed his men died in martyrdom (mati syahid) but in actual fact, they died in vain (mati katak),” he nonchalantly spoke, showing no remorse on his face as the crowd burst into laughter.
While the families and victims of the incident evidently still have not healed from their wounds, neither forgiven nor forgotten those responsible for the black mark in history, Dr Mahathir continues playing the blame game despite his wrongdoings, and has had no sense of decency that he went as far as to even make jokes about it.
