Muslim group labels Marina a hypocrite, stands by 'Comango link' statement

PETALING JAYA (Nov 12): Quashing a warning from Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir for legal action against Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma), the Muslim group today defended its statement about her connection to the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs in the Universal Periodic Review Process (Comango).
Isma vice president Aminuddin Yahaya not only slammed Marina for not being aware of the workings of Sisters in Islam (SIS) as a board member but also called her a hypocrite.
"As the board member of SIS, Marina Mahathir must be responsible, involved directly or indirectly in the actions of Comango. It is unlikely that a board member is not aware of part of the activities of an organisation that she mutually leads (with other people)," he said.
"Marina’s threat to sue Isma also reflects her hypocrisy as she has championed for freedom of expression.
"But when an issue exposes herself, she threatens to sue," he added in a statement.
Aminuddin was reacting to news reports that Marina wanted Isma to retract its statements over her involvement in Comango, saying she was not part of the process.
She reportedly said she will take legal action aginst them if they failed to withdraw their statements.
Aminuddin, in his statement today, claimed that Isma has sufficient evidence indicating Marina’s support towards Comango.
"Isma views these issues as very serious because it can undermine sovereignty of the nation and Islam in this country," he added.
On Friday, Isma distributed 70,000 leaflets at mosques throughout the country after Friday prayers, condemning Comango for making demands which were against Islam and threatening the Federal Constitution.
The group also accused the coalition for being an agent of backed by Western powers to spread liberal views in the country.
The coalition had called for the freedom to renounce Islam; the protection of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) rights; the removal of Malay privileges; the freedom to embrace Syiah teachings; and the right for Catholics to refer to God as "Allah", among others.
The leaflets featured pictured of Marina and election watchdog NGO Bersih co-chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.
The group had also named NGOs such as SIS and Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) as being supporters of Comango.
Marina, when contacted by fz.com today, said she was currently abroad and will react to Aminuddin's statement later this week.
