Umno tells why Malays won’t join PPBM

Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa says personal spats between PPBM leaders are preventing Malays from joining the party.

PETALING JAYA: Umno has scoffed at Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s call for Malay parties to join PPBM, citing several reasons why the community would not entertain such an idea.

The party’s secretary-general, Annuar Musa, said Malays would reject PPBM because the party had divided the community due to personal spats between certain leaders.

The Ketereh MP claimed the Malays also felt cheated by the unfulfilled promises PPBM made in its manifesto in the run-up to the May 9 general election.

Annuar also alleged that PPBM was responsible for encouraging liberal values and erosion of Malay rights by appointing DAP politicians to head important ministries, like finance and information.

Even worse, he said, many viewed PPBM as Mahathir’s personal party and if he was out of the picture, it would be the death knell for the party.

“PPBM is not the answer to the dreams and aspiration of the Malays. It would be better if their members join Umno and PAS,” he said in a Facebook post.

Earlier today, Mahathir, who is also the PPBM chairman, called on Malay parties, including Umno, to join PPBM in efforts to unite the Malays.

Mahathir said he found more and more Malay parties were being formed, which reduced the potential of the Malay parties to win the election.

He also said if the community was split, they would become weak.
